What is an Alpaca?
The alpaca was bred for wool by the Incas thousands of years ago and is one of the oldest livestock animals in the world. The alpaca (Lama pacos) is a type of llama and belongs to the camel family. It lives in the South American Andes and was probably bred from the wild guanaco. The alpacas are cloven-hoof animals and are classified as even-toed ungulates. Like all camelids they are ruminants, but, in contrast to the „real“ ruminants, they have only one stomach divided into three parts. When bred for wool production, alpacas produce very fine fibres, which can be processed for high-quality and correspondingly expensive textiles.
